Back O' Bennachie by North Sea Gas
Back O' Bennachie is a traditional Scottish song in the Doric dialect of Scots. This version was recorded by North Sea Gas, a local band. It is also known by the name 'Where Gadie Rins'. The song dates back to the early 1600s.
Despite its jaunty tune the song is actually quite sad. It tells the story of a woman who loved two men, both of whom died in tragic circumstances.
The video shows parts of the Bennachie mountain range, Gadie Burn from various points along its length, Lickleyhead Castle, the Ballater Games and other shots suggesting a Scottish theme!

Gin I were whaur the gaudie rins
Whaur the gaudie rins, whaur the gaudie rins
Gin I were whaur the gaudie rins
At the back o’ Bennachie
Verses
I never had but twa richt lads,
twa richt lads, aye bonnie lads,
I never had but twa richt lads,
They dearly court'd me.
Tane was killed in Laurin Fair,
The Lowran Fair, aye the Laurin Fair;
Tane was killed at the Laurin Fair,
The ither was drooned in Dee.
I gave to him the haunin’ fine
The haunin’ fine, the haunin’ fine
Gave to him the haunin’ fine
His mornin’ dressed tae be
Well, he gave to me the linen fine
The linen fine, aye the linen fine
Gave to me the linen fine
Me windin’ sheet tae be
Gin I were whaur the gaudie rins
Wi’ the bonny broom an’ the yellow whims
Gin I were whaur the gaudie rins
At the back o’ Bennachie
